The Bale Banjar is the most fundamental unit of civil society in Bali. Traditionally the epicentre of a village, the Banjar hall is a roofed, open-air pavilion where the village’s married men hold meetings, settle disputes, and delegate responsibilities for cooperative work projects. May is an important month for the Balinese as they celebrate Galungan, the biggest religious holiday next to Nyepi. It is the time to honour God and the ancestors with intricate rituals and ceremonies that are performed over a 10-day period. Penjors - tall bamboo poles decorated with rice, fruits and coconut leaves, decorate the streets. The following are Galungan-related days that you won’t want to miss:
