Indonesia Independence Day

17 August 2017

This day marks Indonesia’s declaration of independence from the Netherlands in 1945 at the end of World War II. Indonesia was a Dutch colony for over 300 years; the first Europeans appeared in Indonesia in the 16th century, when Portuguese, Dutch and British traders sought the way of monopolization for the sources of nutmeg, cloves and pepper. The Dutch became the dominant European power in Indonesia and established the Dutch East India Company and in 1800, the Dutch East Indies as a nationalized colony. It took Indonesia four years of diplomatic and armed resistance before independence was formally granted by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. In 2005, the Netherlands finally recognized 17 August 1945 as Indonesia’s date of independence. On this day, red-and-white flags adorn the streets and flag raising ceremonies take place in government offices.
