In anticipation of the upcoming Nyepi Day also known as the Day of Silence that marks the start of the Hindu New Year, the Balinese partakes in a procession known as the Melasti Pilgrimage, where hundreds of Balinese carry temple artefacts to the beaches for purification. Taking place three days prior to Nyepi, the Balinese wear colourful clothing, and women carry tall offerings of fruit and rice while some of the men carry a yellow and white cloth that symbolizes the bridge of God. The elaborate ceremonies continue until early evening and are intended as spiritual purification for the whole village.
