Dubbed “the longest night” by the Ba- linese, Siwa Ratri is a time for self-re ec- tion and meditation. Prayers will begin at 6:00am on the day and continue on for 24-hours until the next morning. Through- out Siwa Ratri, devotees will fast and pray while asking for forgiveness from the God Shiva. Many will abstain from speaking for at least 12-hours and fast for 24-hours. Serious devotees will stay up for 36-hours. The entire purpose of Siwa Ratri is to re- mind the Balinese to have self-control, to surrender and stay close to God, and that the earth and material matter are only temporary.
