A Six-Course Chinese New Year Celebration at Hotel Tugu Bali

Bali, Indonesia — This Chinese New Year, Hotel Tugu Bali welcomes guests to gather Under the Red Lanterns for an evening where heritage, ritual, and culinary storytelling intertwine. Rooted in centuries-old Chinese traditions and harmoniously woven with Bali’s spiritual soul, the celebration unfolds as a meaningful tribute to unity, protection, and renewed fortune.

The evening takes place at Bale Sutra, an extraordinary dining sanctuary reborn from history itself. Originally built in 1706 during the Kang Xi era, the Bale Sutra Temple stands as a living relic of more than three centuries past. Today, it has been transformed into one of Bali’s most dramatic private dining spaces—where guests dine beneath the serene gaze of the 19th-century Japanese Kanon Goddess, surrounded by rare 18th–19th-century scroll paintings and charcoal portraits of Bali’s last kings. In this setting, every gathering becomes a story worthy of legend.

The celebration opens with a rare and captivating cultural moment: a ceremonial duet between the Chinese Lion Dance and the Balinese Barong. More than a performance, this symbolic encounter reflects shared values of balance, resilience, and collective blessings—setting the tone for a night of reflection, reunion, and reverence.

A Feast of Meaning and Memory

The six-course Chinese New Year menu is thoughtfully curated to reflect the symbolic language of the season—where every ingredient carries intention, and every course honors abundance, longevity, harmony, and togetherness.

The journey begins with a vibrant Yu Sheng–inspired salad of crisp vegetables, tuna, citrus, sesame, and crushed peanuts, traditionally tossed to invite prosperity and fresh beginnings. A comforting double-boiled herbal chicken truffle soup follows, infused with goji berries and traditional Chinese herbs—also available in a vegetarian interpretation—celebrating health and long life.

Auspicious main courses take center stage with crispy pork belly dressed in chili oil and black vinegar, alongside tea-smoked duck served with plum sauce and bok choy, accompanied by fragrant Hainan rice. Vegetarian guests are equally embraced with braised eggplant with tofu and Buddha’s Delight, a dish long associated with mindfulness and balance.

At the heart of the celebration, two-metre-long handmade longevity noodles are shared as a powerful symbol of enduring fortune and familial bonds. The evening gently concludes with warm tang yuan filled with caramelised nuts, red bean, and sesame, complemented by fortune cookies and a calming selection of Chinese floral teas.
